GETTING AROUND

Kalkan is not so big that you can’t walk everywhere BUT it is very steep and most tend to walk down to the harbour / Old Town and get a taxi back to their holiday property.

There is a taxi rank at the beginning of the entrance to the Old Town. They are plentiful and cheap.

Many will give you a business card to put on the fridge so you can call from your property if you don’t fancy walking at all.

BUS STATION / OTOGAR

You can get to just about anywhere in Turkiye from the local bus station but most just use the local Dolmus for a trip to our local town of Kas (30 mins) or the local beaches of Patara and Kaputas (both around 15 mins). If your feeling brave you can even visit Fethiye in about an hour.

Dolmus are plentyful and cheap.

For more info please use our local Facebook groups for advice and the latest timetables. Both are full of interesting and current Kalkan information.

BEACHES

The “Turquoise Coast” is known for its crystal-clear waters and rugged terrain, the area is scattered with tiny bays and unnamed pebbly shores.

Kalkan has many beach clubs all with their own charm and offerings. They are located on both sides of the bay and most can be reached by free water taxi.

Kalkan also has it’s own “Town Beach” which is located at the end of the harbour restaurants street. It is a pebbly beach and there are plenty of sunbeds available to hire.

Only a short drive from Kalkan, you’ll find two of Türkiye’s best beaches:

Hiding in a deep gorge, is the picturesque beach of Kaputaş, and passing through the ruins of an ancient Lycian port, you’ll find the country’s longest beach, Patara.

HISTORY

This former Greek fishing village may be a thriving tourist resort now, but during the Ottoman Empire it was an important port, trading everything from silk and charcoal to olive oil and wine.

However, it’s the region’s Lycian roots which are most obvious when out and about – from tombs which seemingly hang off mountain sides, and the sarcophaguses which pepper nearby Kaş and Patara, to numerous Lycian city ruins.

History buffs should visit the local ancient cities of Xanthos and Letoon, which have made it on to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list, or visit the beautiful hanging tombs at Demre.

Alternatively, combine a look around one of Lycia’s key ports with a day on one of the country’s best beaches at Patara, or head to Kas’ beautiful sea-facing amphitheatre to see the sunset before enjoying dinner in the town.

Kalkan is also on the Lycian Way which is a trekking route following the traces of the ancient trade route of the Lycians along the Turkish Mediterranean coast.

The route is 509-kilometer long from Fethiye to Antalya and connects 18 ancient cities.

For more information: https://antalyatouristinformation.com/things-to-do/attraction/lycian-way/

Discover the sunken city of Kekova

A devastating earthquake caused this tiny Turkish island to succumb to the Mediterranean Sea. Various Kalkan tour operators offer organised day trips, where you can see the partially submerged city with its Byzantine Church.

Usually, trips also include a visit to Simena, where you can appreciate their delicious ice cream and trek up to the Ottoman castle.

Head into the mountains

The Taurus Mountains, just behind Kalkan, hide gorges, lakes and traditional villages. Get a birds-eye-view of the coast and enjoy lunch at a trout farm whilst enjoying the cooler climate.

FOOD AND DRINK

Kalkan old town is famous for its atmospheric rooftop and harbour restaurants. The cuisine ranges from relatively simple to Michelin standard meals, it’s always brilliantly fresh, authentic and often very affordable.

Don’t know where to eat in Kalkan?

There are far too many establishments for us to list here but, to help you decide, please follow the link below to make use of Visit Kalkan Dining page which gives the latest menus and reccommendations.

Where ever you’re staying in Kalkan you’re never far from a supermarket or a smaller local store who, generally, sell cigarettes and alcohol.
